Esphur E. Foster, a Chapel Hill native who attended N.C. Central University, joined the law school staff in 1975. Before becoming receptionist, she assisted with the books, was in charge of the physical building and worked as relief receptionist.

As full-time receptionist, Foster dispensed public information, oversaw parking, answered requests for applications and catalogues, scheduled tours and open houses, handled emergency loans and worked closely with Elizabeth J. Furr, then assistant dean of admissions and student affairs. She also volunteered her support to fundraising efforts and student activities. Students also benefitted from her culinary talents; she often brought them food.

Foster, a 1991 Chancellor’s Award recipient, was known for being approachable, caring and a good listener. The award citation praised her warmth and “infectiously cheerful good sense.” Of her role at the law school, the citation said: “Receptionist she is to all who enter there; counselor and consoler to all who remain and learn from her wisdom.”
