Thomas Shetley managed the Student Stores for 21 years before taking a new post as director of auxiliary services in December 1985.

He was lauded in the award citation for taking entrepreneurial initiative in the public interest at the Student Stores.

“To guide the growth of a one-room campus book exchange into a well-managed $10 million-a-year activity housed in its own building, with outposts around the campus, and supplying the personal needs of students, faculty and staff from books to computers would, by itself, be an outstanding achievement. To make his enterprise the means of providing scholarships for thousands of needy students elicits the gratitude of the University community.”
