Ophelia H. Andrew was the Department of Sociology’s sole staff member when she started work there in 1959. In 1985, she supervised almost 80 people and oversaw the expenditure of the department’s $750,000 budget.

“She nurtured the department’s faculty and staff as though they were her family,” the citation read, “guided its students as though they were her children and sustained its alumni as though they were her grown offspring.”
